Dear members and users

Regarding the occurrence of theft incident by an employee of the University of Tokyo Consumer Cooperative Association

The University of Tokyo Co-op

At our Co-op Hongo First Purchasing Department, it was discovered that a co-op employee (at the time) had stolen computers, etc. from the same store. Below, we will provide an overview of the incident and explain future countermeasures.
This theft is a scandalous incident that shakes the trust in the co-op, and we sincerely apologize for the great inconvenience it has caused to our members and users.

  1. Summary of the incident

On August 22, 2023, it was discovered that the employee had stolen computers, etc. from the First Purchasing Department. As a result of the investigation, the theft by the employee was repeated multiple times between October 2022 and August 2023, and the total amount of damage was approximately 7.9 million yen.

2. Response of the University of Tokyo Co-op

As soon as the incident was discovered, we established an emergency situation system, discussed the response with our legal advisor, and conducted an investigation and pursuit while consulting with the local police station. As mentioned above, we have determined the full extent of the incident and damage. After the incident was discovered, we reported the progress to the university and took action while sharing information in order to file a complaint with the police. The employee in question was dismissed on September 20th after following the prescribed procedures, and the amount of damages was paid in full by the end of September.

3. Measures to prevent recurrence

① Establishment of recurrence prevention review committee

At the September 27th Board of Directors meeting, we established a Recurrence Prevention Review Committee, which discussed specific measures to prevent recurrence during October, and reported to the October 18th Board of Directors meeting.

②About internal control

In response to this theft incident, we held a study session on internal controls for senior executives in early November. Going forward, we will regularly identify risks and consider countermeasures for each business division, and create a work environment that prevents fraud from occurring.

The University of Tokyo Co-op takes this scandal very seriously and will work hard to prevent it from happening again and to regain everyone's trust.
